The Book That Made Me Fall In Love With Audiobooks

The world of audiobooks is one I have only recently delved into - and I never expected it to be with this book.

I have only read a handful of romance novels, maybe even not that. It's not a genre that I ever find myself fancying. That was until I watched To All the Boys I've Loved Before on Netflix.

TATBILB (wow that's such a long abbreviation it's almost not worth abbreviating) low key changed my life. I had seen all the hype about it on Twitter and YouTube and thought to myself, "you're never gonna read it so you might as well just watch it". So I did.

And I absolutely loved it. It became my 'guilty pleasure' and now I've seen it at least three times. I loved the characters, the cheesy plot line and the soundtrack.

Fast forward a couple of months... I had made an Audible account out of curiosity - I wanted to see if audiobooks were for me. The first audiobook I bought was Stephen Fry's Mythos, which I am still listening to because it's so damn long. I was really enjoying it, but felt like I needed something more light-hearted to indulge in.

As I was scrolling through Audible's best sellers list, TATBILB came up. I initially scrolled past it because I was convinced I wouldn't enjoy it as I know the story so well. But a few days went by with this free credit just sitting in my account feeling very lonely, so I bought it. I always thought YA romance would be too childish and painfully over romantic for me, but feeling sorry for myself and 600 miles away from home, I decided to treat myself.

At first, I didn't like the voice of Lara Jean. I was stuck in the mindset that listening to the audiobook would be like watching my much-loved film without actually using my eyes, so part of me wanted it to be Lana Condor's voice. Once I got over this initial uncomfortableness, I actually really liked the new voice. It quickly melted into the character and felt natural. I might actually prefer the audiobook voice to Lana Condor's.... wait no I didn't say that I take that back.

When listening to Mythos, I usually listen at at least 1.25 speed, otherwise it would just take too long. But when listening to TATBILB, I found myself slowing the speed down to 1.10 or maybe even normal speed. This way, I appreciated the story a lot more. It suddenly wasn't anything like reading a book - it was like I was daydreaming and these scenarios were appearing in my head as if I were imagining them myself. It was as if Lara Jean was a character I invented and my brain was coming up with all these situations to keep me entertained on the bus. The story wasn't coming from the page, but directly from my brain.

And that is why I am now in love with audiobooks.
